What is early literacy?
Everything children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write.

What is so important about early literacy?
Research has revealed that children learn the skills they need to read years before they start school.

How can you help your child get ready to read?

  • Pick a good time and read regularly
  • Have books on hand at all times (home, car, doctor’s office)
  • Point to and identify objects in pictures
  • Talk about what you read
  • Ask “what” questions, repeat what your child says
  • Offer praise and encouragement
  • Follow your child’s interests
  • Choose books with lots of action and interaction

Early childhood is a magical time for learning and exploration. The library offers many ways to enhance your child’s understanding of these early literacy building blocks.

  • Booklists to assist you in selecting the best materials for your child’s age, stage and interests
  • Games and activities you can play with your children at home or anywhere
  • Story times that seamlessly incorporate many early literacy building blocks into the program
  • Workshops that elaborate on early literacy for parents and caregivers are periodically offered at libraries throughout the county
  • Explanatory pamphlets are available for all the six early literacy skills for each of the three age groups at your library
  • Highly trained and friendly staff are available to suggest and find books and materials for you and your child
